Allowing for Group Effects When Estimating Import Demand for Source and Product Differentiated Goods AgEcon

In this study an import demand model (differential production model) is presented that is used in estimating the demand for source and product differentiated goods simultaneously. Unlike the traditional import demand models, this model can account for changes in relative group expenditures. Expenditure estimates differed when comparing the differential production model and Rotterdam model results. Results showed that if group revenue shares are relatively fixed, then the bias in expenditure estimates due to omitting group effects will be small when using traditional demand models such as the AIDS or Rotterdam models. An Analysis of Food Grain Consumption in Urban Jiangsu Province of China AgEcon

The impacts of economic and demographic variables on the demand for food grain commodities in urban Jiangsu province of China are estimated, using both the QUAIDS and the AIDS models. Results show that the demands for wheat flour and coarse grains are price-elastic while the demands for rice and grain products are price-inelastic. Certain demographic variables show as having a significant impact on food grain demand. Finally, a decomposition of causes of changes in rice consumption over the period of 1995–2007 is performed.

Bayesian Estimation of a Censored AIDS Model for Whole Grain Products AgEcon

When using household-level data in examining consumer's demand it is common to find that consumers purchase only a subset of the available goods, setting the demand for the remaining goods to zero. Ignoring such censoring of the dependent variables in the estimation can lead to biased parameter estimates. In this paper we investigate the household's demand for six types of whole grain and non-whole grain breakfast cereals and products using a censored Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) and estimate the parameters of the demand system via Bayesian methods. Canadian Orange Juice Imports and Production Level Import Demand AgEcon

Import demand equations are estimated in order to identify the own-, cross-price, and volume elasticities that can be used to determine the best marketing strategy to increase U.S. orange juice gallons in the Canadian import market. This study uses the firm’s version of production differential, AIDS, CBS, and NBR models. An expansion of total Canadian orange juice import gallons using advertising favors the U.S. much more than it does the other three origins investigated— Brazil, Mexico, and ROW. A 1% increase in imported gallons of orange juice due to advertising will increase U.S. imports by 1.20% and Brazil’s gallons by 0.60%.

CHINA'S RURAL HOUSEHOLD DEMAND FOR FRUIT AND VEGETABLES AgEcon

A two-stage budgeting LES-LA/AIDS system is sued to estimate rural household demand in China with special emphasis on changes in demand for fruit and vegetable commodities across different income groups. The own-price elasticity for food was found to be more elastic than that for clothing, housing, durable goods, and other items. Within the food group, price elasticities range from -1.042 to -0.019. Grain, with an expenditure elasticity of almost unity, is an important staple food for the average rural household. Vegetables are important nonstaple foods relative to fruits. DEMAND AND COMPETITION AMONG SUPPLY SOURCES: THE INDONESIAN FRUIT IMPORT MARKET AgEcon

Indonesia is a rapidly growing and competitive market for U.S. fruit. A restricted, source-differentiated, almost ideal demand system is estimated for apples, oranges, grapes, and other fruit in Indonesia. The Marshallian expenditure elasticities for U.S. fruit are estimated to be between 1.01 and 1.21. For grapes and oranges, competition with other fruits appears to be more important that competition with other supply sources. For apples, strong source-differentiated substitution relationships are found.

DEMAND FOR HEALTHY FOOD IN THE UNITED STATES AgEcon

This study investigates the demand for selected healthy food groups in the United States. The original linear approximate almost ideal demand system (LA/AIDS) is modified by the use of a Laspeyres index and a normalization in order to compute demand elasticities identically to the AIDS model. The results of this study suggest that poultry is the most price elastic while cereals are the least price elastic. Fresh fruits and fresh vegetables are more price elastic than processed fruits and processed vegetables. In this study we modeled demand interrelationships of at-home nonalcoholic beverage consumption in the United States using a unique data set developed using Nielsen HomeScan panel data of household purchases of nonalcoholic beverages over the period January 1998 through December 2003. We used 72 monthly observations of expenditure shares, real prices and real per capita expenditures of 10 unique categories of nonalcoholic beverages in a full-blown AIDS model with an adjustment for seasonal (quarterly) variability in data. Does Negative Information Always Hurt Meat Demand? An Examination of Avian Influenza Information Impacts on U.S. AgEcon

Consumers’ consumption patterns could be affected by food safety information, however, it is more important to consider where the food safety issue occurs. If the food safety issue happens in other countries, in other words, it outbreaks out of the target market, negative information may be beneficial; in contrast, if the food safety issue occurs within the market, results may consistent with previous studies. Based on this assumption, this paper reinvestigates the impacts of AI media coverage and BSE cases on the demand of meat in U.S. market. Estimated results provide supports for our assumption, i.e., AI information has positive effect on poultry and turkey demands in short term, and BSE affect beef demand negatively.

Empirical Tests of Impacts of Rationing: The Case of Poland in Transition AgEcon

This study tests the theory of rationing, examining changes in household consumption behavior during the transition to a market economy in Poland, 1987–92. A model of consumption under rationing is developed and fitted to prereform quarterly data from the Polish Household Budget Survey. Virtual prices, prices at which consumers would have voluntarily chosen the rationed levels of goods, are derived for food and housing. The prereform Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) model with rationing is estimated. Estimates from the virtual AIDS yield plausible values for price and income elasticities. Estimation of a Censored AIDS Model: A Simulated Amemiya-Tobin Approach AgEcon

Kuhn-Tucker approach and its dual have been proposed to the demand system estimation when there are non-negativity bindings. However, empirical researchers have been struggling two decades in applying this method into practice due to: (1) the difficulty in derivation of a coherent econometric model, and (2) the cumbersome evaluation of high order probability integrals needed in parameter estimation. In this paper, we avoid the above two issues by using the Amemiya-Tobin demand system approach and the simulation procedure to evaluate the probability integrals. An AIDS model is estimated and the elasticities are obtained that are impossible to achieve when using Kuhn-Tucker approach. The model is applied to an analysis of Canadian household food demand.

Researchers believe that rice in developed countries such as Japan became an inferior good a few decades ago. This study employs the flexible complete demand system for the recent cross-sectional data in Japan. Our results clearly show that rice in Japan is a normal good contrary to the preceding studies. The objective of this research is to analyze the food consumption patterns and to conduct econometric analysis of food demand structure. We use the monthly basis cross-sectional household data, Annual Report on the Family Income and Expenditure Survey (FIES) in 1997. Strategic Vertical Pricing in the U.S. Butter Market AgEcon

This article develops a methodology for empirically analyzing vertically strategic interactions in a multi-level supply channel. The model is used to analyze the vertical channel for U.S. butter manufacturing and retailing. Aggregating products to the firm level and using a nonlinear AIDS demand system under alternative strategic pricing assumptions is estimated using full information maximum likelihood (FIML) for seven geographic markets from 1998-2002.
